Barberton Became "Magic City"

Barberton in the Akron area sprang into being and prospered so rapidly a century ago that it became known as "Magic City."

The town took its name from Ohio Columbus Barber, who bought approximately 1000 acres of land in the area with three business partners in 1890.

Numerous manufacturing plants were located in Barberton early on. Most prominent was the Diamond Match Co., of which Barber was president. He founded the town and was instrumental in bringing many of the industrial enterprises to the township.
