Inspections When does the Building Department perform waterproofing inspections?
  1. Rough-in inspection is performed when the footer tile is in and connected and the wall(s) have been parged and tarred. (24 hour notice is required)
  2. Final inspection is performed when excavated area has been back-filled.
Materials What materials should I use to waterproof my wall(s)?
  1. 4 inch Schedule 3034 perforated PVC footer drain tile (holes side down) Rating of 1500 pound crush. Slope shall be no less then 1/16 inch per foot.
  2. 1/2-inch thick coat of Type 'M' mortar parging.
  3. Heavy coat of tar or other approved material (i.e. ironite) over mortar.
  4. 3/4 to 1-1/2 inch #57 washed gravel or limestone. No slag or 'pea' type stone. (No stone shall be placed below the footer tile.)
Backfill What is the proper way to backfill once the waterproofing has been done?
  1. The drain tile is covered with at least eight (8) inches of washed gravel or limestone but not closer than twelve (12) inches to the established surface grade. See Construction Elevation Drawing
  2. The top twelve (12) inches of backfill shall be dirt/clay suitable for lawn or shrubs.
  3. If the surface is to be paved, the top twelve (12) inches shall be a suitable base for such construction.
How do I get rid of the excess dirt removed from the excavated area? You're on your own for this answer! (You may want to check for signs along lake front properties that are advertising for the need of fill dirt.)
