The Baptist Church
Baptists believe that the
Bible is the sole authority
for faith and practice, that each church is self-governing, and that God
calls us directly as individuals to a life of faith and service. Baptists practice
two ordinances: Believer's Baptism
and Communion. Baptist members are committed to religious liberty for all. Baptist
beginnings are traced to the reform movement in
seventeenth-century England. The form of baptism by total immersion gives
Baptists their name, as there is no one person to whom we trace our beginnings.
There
are 27 different Baptist groups in the United States.

Founded in 1905, our first building was located on a lot adjoining Garfield School. The congregation relocated to the corner of Lincoln and Detroit in 1918, meeting in what is now the basement, until 1923. The Christian Education wing was built in 1952 and the annex in 1969. During these past 84 years, we have served the spiritual needs of friends and members, served the community, and worked cooperatively with other Lakewood churches.
We are an American Baptist Church, one of 5,800 nationwide. We baptize by immersion, we practice open communion, and we are a mission people. Sunday church school and morning worship are open to those looking for a church home. Community groups use our building for meetings. While grateful for our history, we are more exited about the present and future. Our purpose is to help one another to know God, to reach out to others, to love and care for each other and to demonstrate God's love.
