Rumi (Jalal al-Din Mohammad Balkhi)

America and Afghanistan share a passion in Rumi. This 13th Century Persian mystic and founder of whirling dervishes, is America's best selling poet. Popularized in the U.S. by modern-day gurus Robert Bly, Deepak Chopra and others,  he is embraced by New Age afficionados and pop culture celebrities. His writings are warmly accepted as a form of non-institutional spiritualism, although some cast him as a spiritual quick fix. Rumi, born Mohammed in what is now Afghanistan, was a Sufi Muslim; his work is firmly rooted in the teachings of Islam. In Afghanistan, his Farsi verses are memorized and recited and he is widely regarded as a saint.

Coleman Barks' translations are liberally recast from other English translations into lyrical and casual free verse. Franklin Lewis attempts more precise translation and the results are more literary. Hard to say how close our versions are to Rumi's intentions or to the passages that reside in the mind of the ordinary Afghan. In Rumi, the divine is cast in sensual terms, the sacred is rapturous. He speaks to deep longings of the hearts of both Americans and Afghans alike. The chord he strikes has transcended his time and place.
