Go Green!
Over 380 billion plastic bags, sacks and wraps are consumed in the U.S. each year according to the EPA. Most of these end up as litter or in landfills. Do your part! Bring reusable bags or purchase one at the market! A $5 donation will get you a bag and help support Music at the Market.

Go Local!
Since 1920, we have lost nearly 67% of our nation’s farmers due to the increase in corporate farms and pressure to “get big or get out” (foodroutes.org). Shopping at the farmers markets supports local, family businesses and helps them keep their land and livelihood.

When farmers sell to agribusinesses and grocery stores, they only receive an average of 20 cents for each dollar spent on their items. The rest goes to distributors, marketers, and the store itself. When you buy produce from your local farmer at the market, that farmer receives 100% of the profits and you help a small business in Northeast Ohio!

“Food miles” refers to the distance food must travel in order to reach its ultimate destination. The average food travels 1,500 miles from farm to table, and the amount of food air-freighted around the world has risen by 140% since 1992! Help reduce gas emissions -- Buy Local!

Nearly 25% of all the oil used in the United States is used for agriculture… most of this is used by industrial agribusinesses producing millions of tons of crops at a time. Help reduce oil consumption in the U.S. Buy food from your local farmer!

It’s acorn squash time!

Focus on Health:
Acorn Squash is a good source of Vitamin A, Vitamin C, and Potassium, and Fiber.

Acorn squash is the perfect side dish for a fall evening meal. Simply cut the squash lengthwise, seed and broil on high on middle oven rack for approximately 1 hour. Add butter and brown sugar towards the end to make a sweet, delectable treat!

To make an entire meal, stuff with fresh ground pork stuffing:

1/2 pound pork sausage meat
3/4 cup fresh bread crumbs
2 tbsp. of butter
1 egg or milk to bind
Salt and pepper
1/2 teaspoon finely chopped fresh sage
1 tsp. chopped parsley

Combine sausage meat and bread crumbs, add the melted butter and seasonings, and lightly sauté for a few minutes. Cool and blend with the beaten egg. Spoon into squash that has been broiled for ½ hour and continue to bake at 350 degrees for ½ hour.

bee

This year is North Union Farmers Market’s year of the Honey bee! You will be able to pick up your local honey, and also information on the health benefits of honey from Lucy at The Honey Company table.

There are recent concerns over a significant and mysterious decline in the population of pollinating honeybees by CCD - Colony Collapse Disorder. We hope this Year of the Honeybee will bring awareness of this very important pollinator's plight. For more information visit the Online PBS NewsHour Report on Missing Bees.

Did You Know? Honey contains antioxidants. A daily dose of honey helps to protect your body from cancer-causing free radicals.   Read up:
