Sunday with the Friends
Nearly every Sunday at 2:00 pm, the Friends of Lakewood Public Library present free concerts, lectures and more. Join us in the Main Library Auditorium. These programs are open to one and all.
November 8 - New Age Acoustic: Brian Henke
Brian Henke doesn’t know it, but in addition to being a virtuoso guitar player, he’s a mesmerizing storyteller. You can’t dance to this music and it’s hard to sing along to songs without words. But those with an open heart and a fertile imagination may find themselves transported to worlds unknown, faced with undreamed of adventure. Man, can this guy play!
November 22 - Brazilian Bossa Nova
Luca Mundaca’s sultry voice and memorable bossa nova melodies will transport you to the secret heart of Brazil. The song Ha Dias from her debut album recently rocketed Luca to international recognition and helped her nab a 2008 Independent Music Award for World Fusion!
December 6 - The Best of Sinatra
Musicologist Frank Casey has selected twenty-five outstanding vocal performances out of the thirteen-hundred recordings that comprise Frank Sinatra’s career to make the case that “Ol’ Blue Eyes” was the best. We weren’t arguing, but it sounds like a fun afternoon, anyway.
December 13 - Troubadours of Divine Bliss
This eclectic, female folk duo boasts harmonies smooth as Kentucky bourbon and soft as Spanish moss. With guitar, accordion, humor and heart they travel the world stirring up people for a revolution of the spirit.
December 20 - Christmas Carols and Jazz Standards
Sugarplum jazz vocalist Kelly Wright celebrates the season with a little help from blues guitar master Pete Cavano. Gather around for fresh takes on frozen end-of-the-year favorites. Some of the best songs ever written only get played in December…
January 10 - Colin Dussault’s Rock and Blues Duo
Legendary harmonica-huffer Colin Dussault joins forces with hard-charging guitarist Jim Tigue for an afternoon of the kind of songs that make you want to quit your job and learn an instrument. Hold onto your ears for rock’n’roll, Memphis blues, and American folk from the best.
January 17 - Singing Seniors
You’re not so young that you can’t sing along! (We know you know the words.) The Singing Seniors promise all your favorite oldies-but-goodies, patriotic anthems and solemn hymns.
January 24 - Velvet Hammer Magic
Richard W. McClendon II offers a sophisticated afternoon of amazing magic. You can’t explain it! Witness card tricks, mind control, objects that vanish into thin air and more. Moments of edge-of-your seat suspense will give way to roars of laughter and a room full of adults will be transformed into moon-eyed children.
February 14 - The Romance of Woodrow and Edith Wilson
In the midst of World War I, the president had been widowed for less than a year when he became involved with Edith Bolling Galt—an unspeakable scandal for the time. Stephanie Vetrone portrays the woman who married a sitting president and single-handedly held his administration together when he was felled by a stroke.
February 28 - Murrow’s Boys Trio
