From the Friends President

Dear Friends,

The State of Ohio has recently announced that state funding to libraries is being drastically reduced to balance the budget. The Friends have pledged to continue to provide funds for all Library programming, to augment the collection with donations we receive and to contribute to general funding with the profits from our book sales.

The Friends recently began selling books online at AbeBooks.com. Select rare and valuable books we’ve received are being offered in the “Friendly Books” section. We hope this new service will provide a new and plentiful stream of revenue for the good of the Library.

The Friends who sort materials and work the books sales say, “Thank you”, to all who donated books and other saleable items to us. We are amazed at the quantity and quality of the books left on our doorstep. I would be remiss if I failed to thank our patrons for completing our recycling project by purchasing books from us. They are not only enriching their lives, but their Library as well.

Paul Dimmick
President

Sunday with the Friends

Nearly every Sunday at 2:00 pm, the Friends of Lakewood Public Library present free concerts, lectures and more. Join us in the Main Library Auditorium.
These programs are open to one and all.

November 8 - New Age Acoustic: Brian Henke
Brian Henke doesn’t know it, but in addition to being a virtuoso guitar player, he’s a mesmerizing storyteller. You can’t dance to this music and it’s hard to sing along to songs without words.  But those with an open heart and a fertile imagination may find themselves transported to worlds unknown, faced with undreamed of adventure. Man, can this guy play!

November 22 - Brazilian Bossa Nova
Luca Mundaca’s sultry voice and memorable bossa nova melodies will transport you to the secret heart of Brazil. The song Ha Dias from her debut album recently rocketed Luca to international recognition and helped her nab a 2008 Independent Music Award for World Fusion!

December 6 - The Best of Sinatra
Musicologist Frank Casey has selected twenty-five outstanding vocal performances out of the thirteen-hundred recordings that comprise Frank Sinatra’s career to make the case that “Ol’ Blue Eyes” was the best. We weren’t arguing, but it sounds like a fun afternoon, anyway.

December 13 - Troubadours of Divine Bliss
This eclectic, female folk duo boasts harmonies smooth as Kentucky bourbon and soft as Spanish moss. With guitar, accordion, humor and heart they travel the world stirring up people for a revolution of the spirit.

December 20 - Christmas Carols and Jazz Standards
Sugarplum jazz vocalist Kelly Wright celebrates the season with a little help from blues guitar master Pete Cavano. Gather around for fresh takes on frozen end-of-the-year favorites. Some of the best songs ever written only get played in December…

January 10 - Colin Dussault’s Rock and Blues Duo
Legendary harmonica-huffer Colin Dussault joins forces with hard-charging guitarist Jim Tigue for an afternoon of the kind of songs that make you want to quit your job and learn an instrument. Hold onto your ears for rock’n’roll, Memphis blues, and American folk from the best.

January 17 - Singing Seniors
You’re not so young that you can’t sing along! (We know you know the words.) The Singing Seniors promise all your favorite oldies-but-goodies, patriotic anthems and solemn hymns.

January 24 - Velvet Hammer Magic
Richard W. McClendon II offers a sophisticated afternoon of amazing magic. You can’t explain it! Witness card tricks, mind control, objects that vanish into thin air and more. Moments of edge-of-your seat suspense will give way to roars of laughter and a room full of adults will be transformed into moon-eyed children.

February 14 - The Romance of Woodrow and Edith Wilson
In the midst of World War I, the president had been widowed for less than a year when he became involved with Edith Bolling Galt—an unspeakable scandal for the time. Stephanie Vetrone portrays the woman who married a sitting president and single-handedly held his administration together when he was felled by a stroke.

February 28 - Murrow’s Boys Trio
These Michigan boys bust out harmonicas, guitars, mandolin and bass to play their own brand of blues, folk and rock music. This special blend is then combined with original lyrics that explore the misconceptions and everyday realities of life in the Midwest.
