The first entry in our Lakewood Future Tools lecture series, Understanding Lakewood: Communities and Memes, was delivered by our very own Kenneth Warren. This program explored Lakewood's communities through the meme lens of Spiral Dynamics and focused on recent economic, political and social developments in Lakewood. Special emphasis was placed on keeping all spirals healthy and evolving intelligently together within a dynamic urban environment. Presentation Brochure [pdf].

Articulating Lakewood's Future: Generation X and Generation Y: new voices within Lakewood's regenerating civic mix described the future of life in the good city. Panelists were Nadhal Eadeh, Vince Frantz, Anila Coniku, Julie Hutchison, Han Liou, Vincent O’Keefe, Lenny Peralta, Dana Romeo, Julie Warren and Keith Smith -- an unprecedented display of our community's greatest assets. Planning a Sustainable City explored new ideas in sustainable planning and development with Paul Alsenas, Director of the Cuyahoga County Planning Commission. A visionary with practical management and political skills, Mr. Alsenas presented an exciting vision about the nature of planning and development that is most appropriate for Lakewood. We capped off the Lakewood Future Tools series with a weekend of two two-part programs featuring Ottawa’s Tim Inkpen.

First up was Making Sense of Community Currency. We learned about the history of community currency and why a stand-alone system can easily become an exercise in futility. Mr. Inkpen spoke from years of experience in Canadian practice, including Toronto Dollars and the Toronto LETS system.

Finally, Tim Inkpen, whose non-profit consulting cooperative teaches individuals and groups to deal with career and community issues using proved business techniques, discussed combining social and career entrepreneurship with Community Currencies in Incubating Social Entrepreneurship.
