Lakewood Public Library
Collection of online historical material

Local History Files An ongoing project begun in the spring of 1998. Transcriptions of the information in our local history collection of pamphlets, newspaper articles, first-person accounts, local legends and photographs.
Local History Resources Dubbed Roena's page after Lakewood's first librarian, Roena Ingham. This page was one of the Library's original seven pages on the Web in 1995, following the assumption that Web surfers seeking Lakewood would be interested in local history resources.
Library Building History Originally presented as an accompaniment to an interior renovation project in 1996. Details major developments in the lives of the two Lakewood libraries.
Reed A. Thomason Mural In 1977-78 artist Reed Thomason created oil-on-canvas panels for the east wall of Children's and Youth Services depicting characters from children's and other classic literature. This site gives background on the artist and the paintings.
Lakewood Historical Society The first Lakewood institution on our site; the first to partner in online presentation of Lakewood's cultural legacy. Includes information on the Oldest Stone House and the Nicholson House.
The Lakewood Public Schools: A Compilation of Histories Organized, edited, and produced by Joseph Wilson, former teacher, principal and personnel director (1947-1979) and Eleanor Chidester, former Clerk-Treasurer of the Lakewood Board of Education and Secretary to the Superintendent of Schools (1956-1972). It appeared in print form in 1984.
Dan Chabek's Lakewood Lore In 1989, Lakewood Historical Society trustee, Dan Chabek, wrote a series for the Lakewood Sun Post to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Lakewood's founding. Nearly 200 articles appear as Lakewood Lore Online.
The Buckeye Chronicles Mr. Chabek struck out beyond Lakewood with vignettes of Ohio history in this Lakewood Historical Society series. This series was created specifically for presentation online.
Artifacts: Articles from the Lakewood Historical Society Articles by director Mazie Adams that appeared in the Society's newsletter — now available to a wider audience online.
More Than Names This electronic memorial to Lakewood war casualties (WWI, WWII, Korea & Vietnam) made its appearance online for Veterans Day in 2002. It expanded a three-year research project completed in 1989 by Lakewood Historical Society curator Lucy Lang Sekerka and published in pamphlet format. Hyperlinking allows clickable maps that plot the last residences of the soldiers allowing residents to learn the names and stories of the men who once lived in their neighborhoods.
Theodor Kundtz: An Online Exhibition The most recent (and ongoing) collaboration of the Lakewood Historical Society and the Library. Items from the Lakewood Historical Society collection and the Kundtz family. Theodor Kundtz was a Hungarian immigrant with woodworking skills, who, by the turn of the 20th century, had become a successful inventor, manufacturer, philanthropist and community leader.
Hidden Victorian Architecture of Lakewood: A Driving Tour In 1999 the Library created a Web version of a pamphlet composed some years earlier by local resident and Victorian architecture afficionado, Craig Bobby.
Historic Buildings of Lakewood Ohio As Mr. Bobby comes across information on Lakewood buildings during his research, he saves it for the Library. With this assistance, we have developed a database of articles, advertisments, and images of Lakewood buildings. Photocopies are kept in binders; an index by address is maintained online.
Volksmarch Year-round Volksmarches in Lakewood. In collaboration with the Valley Vagbonds. Route and information on the stops is available online -- or information on where to pick up a route pamphlet is provided.
Birdtown Reminiscences This article by resident and writer Suzanna Megles supplemented information the Library had on Birdtown in our Local History files, Lakewood Lore and published books. Ms. Megles was a contributor to Lakewood Birdtown Trail, our second history walk.
Grant School Discovery Class
Local History Project
Each year, the students in Nadine Bluemel’s Discovery Class create a documentary on an aspect of Lakewood history with the guidance of Mazie Adams, Director of the Lakewood Historical Society. Find information here on the Templar Automobile and Birdtown.
Jimmie Foxx Field In 2000, the City of Lakewood dedicated a local baseball field to Baseball Hall of Famer Jimmie Foxx. The Library posted this site commemorating the dedication event and the life of this former Lakewood resident. (The story of another professional baseball notable is recorded in a Lakewood Lore article: Lakewood resident and Library patron, Bill Wamby, made the only unassisted triple play in World Series history.)
Nichols' Worth More sports history, regional in content and interest, was culled from retired sportwriter Bill Nichols' Plain Dealer articles. Nearly 100 articles are online.
West Shore Concert Series From 1950-1986 the cultural life of the West suburban area was enriched by programs in this concert series, which gave performance opportunities to Cleveland artists and composers. Program notes and articles from each of the seasons are encapsulated online.
