S. H. Herriman was appointed the first Superintendent of Schools in 1879 upon the opening of the East Rockport Central School. He also served as the teacher of the "higher grades" and supervised a staff of four other teachers. Mr. Herriman served until 1881.
William Lippert became Superintendent of Schools in 1881 and held the position for seven years.
Charles J. Weeks, graduate of Baldwin University, was appointed Superintendent of Schools in 1888 and served until 1895. For twenty years beyond his resignation as Superintendent, Mr. Weeks continued as a teacher at Lakewood High School.
J. M. H. Fredericks was Superintendent of Schools for fifteen years, 1895 to 1910. He later became Superintendent of the Cleveland Schools.
Charles P. Lynch held the longest tenure as Superintendent of Schools in Lakewood. He came to Lakewood from the position of Principal, West High School, Cleveland. He retired in 1927 after seventeen years of service.
Julius E. Warren was the Assistant Superintendent of Schools
in Springfield, Massachusetts when appointed Superintendent of Schools in Lakewood in 1927. After seven years in Lakewood, he returned to Massachusetts as Superintendent of the Newton Schools. He later became Commissioner of Education in Massachusetts.
George A. Bowman had been Superintendent of Schools in Chillicothe and Marion, Ohio before his appointment as Superintendent of Schools in Lakewood. He served in Lakewood for seven years. He left in 1941, having accepted the position of Superintendent of Schools in Youngstown, Ohio. He later became the fifth and longest serving president of Kent State University.
Paul A. Rehmus was the high school principal in Mt. Clemens and Grosse Point, Michigan before becoming Principal, Lakewood High School in 1940. One year later, 1941, he was appointed Superintendent of Schools. He served six years, until 1947, when he accepted the position of superintendent of the Portland, Oregon schools. He later joined the Ford Foundation as an administrator.
Martin W. Essex was appointed Superintendent of Schools in Lakewood in November, 1947. He previously was superintendent in East Liverpool, Ohio and Ferndale, Michigan. After serving eight years in Lakewood he became Superintendent of Schools in Akron, Ohio. From Akron he became Superintendent of Public Instruction in Ohio where he served the longest tenure (ten years) of any person in that office. He was elected President of the American Association of School Administrators.
Dr. William B. Edwards became Superintendent of Schools in 1955 following superintendencies in Twinsburg, Norton, and South Euclid-Lyndhurst, Ohio and Peoria, Illinois. He served in Lakewood for ten and one-half years. He died in office on January 31, 1966.
Dr. John Ellis was Superintendent of Schools in Massillon, Ohio before his appointment as Superintendent of Schools in Lakewood in 1966. He served for five years until appointed Superintendent of Schools in Columbus, Ohio in 1971. He later moved to Washington, D. G. as Executive Deputy Commissioner of Education, u. S. Office of Education. In 1980 he became Superintendent of Schools in Austin, Texas.
Dr. Robert C. Cawrse returned to Lakewood when he was appointed Superintendent of Schools in 1971. He had graduated from Lakewood High School. He was Principal, Rocky River High School, Superintendent of Schools in Chagrin Falls and Bay Village before becoming superintendent in Lakewood. He retired from education when he resigned as Superintendent of Schools in Lakewood in 1975.
Dr. Richard A. Boyd, in 1984, is the Superintendent of Schools in Lakewood.
He was appointed in 1975 after serving as Superintendent of Schools in Warren,
Ohio. While serving as Superintendent in Lakewood he was elected President
of the Buckeye Association of School Administrators and as a member of the
Executive Committee of the American Association of School Administrators.
The Superintendents of the Lakewood Schools
