George W. Grill was the first Assistant Superintendent of the Lakewood Schools. He joined the school system in 1920 as the Clerk of the Board of Education and served in that capacity for eight years. He was instrumental in the planning of much of the physical plant of the schools during Lakewood's rapid growth. The position of Assistant Superintendent was created as commensurate with the responsibilities Mr. Grill held. He served as Assistant Superintendent for twelve years. He resigned in 1940 to become Superintendent of the Cleveland Clinic. He held a Bachelor's degree from Dakota Wesleyan University and a Master's degree in Educational Administration. from Columbia University.

Samuel S. Dickey succeeded George W. Grill as Assistant Superintendent of Schools. Mr. Dickey came to Lakewood in 1928 as Principal, Harding Junior High School after serving as a teacher, coach, principal and superintendent in Ohio and New Jersey. He served at Harding for twelve years and was appointed Assistant Superintendent in 1940. He served until his death in January, 1960. He held a Bachelor's degree from the College of Wooster and a Master's degree in Educational Administration from Columbia University.

Dr. Paul E. Spayde was appointed Assistant Superintendent of Schools upon the death of Samuel S. Dickey. Dr. Spayde
joined the Lakewood Schools in 1949 as Director of Research and Guidance after teaching experience in Ohio, service in the U. S. Army, and a research assistantship at Ohio State University. He was appointed Assistant Superintendent in 1960 and served until 1966. He was acting Superintendent of the Lakewood Schools from January, 1966 to September, 1966 following the death of Dr. William B. Edwards. He resigned in October, 1966 to become the Assistant Superintendent of Public Instruction for the State of Ohio. He holds a Bachelor's and Master's degrees, and a Doctorate from Ohio State University.

Dr. Roger L. Holmes was appointed Assistant Superintendent of Schools upon the resignation of Dr. Paul E. Spayde. Dr. Holmes joined the Lakewood Schools as Reading Center Counselor in 1959 after experience as a teacher, a laboratory school teacher at Miami University, and service in the United States Air Force. He served as Language Arts Coordinator and Director of Elementary Education before his appointment as Assistant Superintendent in October, 1966. He resigned in February, 1973 to become Superintendent of Schools in Westlake, Ohio.

Dr. Daniel M. Kalish was appointed Assistant Superintendent of Schools in 1973 upon the resignation of Dr. Roger L. Holmes. Dr. Kalish joined the staff as an elementary school teacher in 1964 after experience as a teacher in Cleveland. He became an assistant principal, acting principal, and principal in Lakewood and was appointed Assistant Superintendent in 1973.
