Dr. Ashraful Hasan
Ashraful ("Ash") Hasan, Ph. D., currently resides in Lakewood, and traces his background to South Asia. He has lived in India, Pakistan and Bangladesh, and obtained his Ph.D. from the University of Alberta, Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. His fields of specialization are International Relations, Islam and Muslim Society, Comparative Politics, and Human Rights.

Dr. Hasan has devoted his career to the issues of regional cooperation, community development and conflict resolution. He was instrumental in fostering the idea of the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC). He has also published research articles and actively promoted the idea of co-operation between countries of South Asia and Southeast Asia. Currently, Hasan is in the process of developing designs to transfer models of international cooperation to community conflict resolution and community development in Lakewood.

Hasan believes that models of cooperation that honor differences while emphasizing interdependence can be successfully translated from the global scale to the local to help communities deal with the challenges of multicultural populations. Bringing families into the process of conflict resolution helps to bring the international models down to the community level.

Dr. Hasan's career has taken him all over the world. He has taught at various universities and colleges in Canada, the United States and overseas. In addition, he has presented academic papers at various national, regional and international conferences and continues to publish research articles in scholarly journals. In 1997, he was awarded a Coolidge Fellowship to attend a 30-day Research Colloquium sponsored by the Association for Religion and Intellectual Life at Columbia University. In 1998, he will be speaking on "Human Rights and the Muslim World" at the XIVth International Congress of Anthropological and Ethnological Studies to be held July 26 - August 1, 1998 at the College of William and Mary, Williamsburg, VA.

Although he has received many academic awards and honors, Dr. Hasan is proudest of the medals and awards he received for good citizenship and his service in the public interest. During his school days at Karachi Grammar School in Karachi, Pakistan, Dr. Hasan received the Honor Shield for good citizenship. During his graduate studies, Dr. Hasan was awarded a certificate of appreciation in recognition of his dedicated service in the public interest during his tenure as a member of the University Senate (1985-86).

In addition to his academic career, Hasan has recently become an entrepreneur in the field of personal motivation. He has created an audio cassette entitled "How to Motivate Yourself" which employs his personally designed "Magic Wheel for Total Quality Management of Your Life". Dr. Hasan combines traditional wisdom with contemporary knowledge to suggest "self-help" (and "easy-to-use") methods to motivate oneself. This audio-book is available in local independent book stores and some of the major chains such as Borders.
