Summer Honors Institutes information is here! Applications are due April 11, 2008.

It’s time to sign up for Advanced Placement Exams!
As you know, deadlines are always important with regard to AP exams, but particularly so in light of the recent transition and movement of students and staff. Students may begin placing orders in the Bookroom on March 4, 2008. Please make sure your student registers for the appropriate AP exam(s) no later than Tuesday, April 1, 2008. We cannot accept orders after that date. As always, your cooperation is appreciated. In order to avoid long lines in the Bookroom, please order as early as possible.

  • A nonrefundable $13.00 fee is required for each exam ordered
  • The total cost for each exam is $84.00
  • Final payment of $71.00 is due April 25, 2008
  • Checks may be made payable to Lakewood High School or you may pay by credit card by calling the Bookroom at 529-4047.

The AP exam schedule is listed here [pdf]. Each exam takes approximately 3½ hours to complete. The AP 2007-08 Bulletin for Students and Parents, which provides specific information about the exams, will be provided to students when they register; please review it with your son or daughter. Additional information is available at www.collegeboard.com/ap. If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to call Mrs. Baylog at 216-529-4330.

NHS logo National Honor Society -- IMPORTANT INFORMATION!
Stoles - Senior members need to order NHS stoles for graduation. As we’ve said many times, membership in National Honor Society is the highest honor a school can bestow upon a student. NHS seniors are recognized for having achieved this honor by wearing the NHS stole over their graduation gown. Stoles are $18.00 and payment may be made to the Bookroom. Checks may be made payable to Lakewood High School or you may pay by credit card by calling the Bookroom at 529-4047. Deadline for ordering stoles is Friday, April 18, 2008.

Service
- Our spring service project involves providing a stash of umbrellas on the north and south sides of the campus for students and staff to borrow in case of a sudden downpour. Umbrellas may be new or "gently used." Please bring umbrellas to Mrs. Baylog’s office.

Channel Stress—Handle It!
Bedford, Fairview, Lakewood and North Olmsted High School student representatives, the Cleveland Museum of Natural History and the Educational Service Center have worked together to plan a conference to help high school students learn healthy ways to manage stress. Yoga, Pilates, and art therapy are examples of sessions students will be able to attend. This is an important opportunity for students to become aware of stress and learn how to avoid negative ways of dealing with it. The conference is scheduled for April 23, 2008, and the cost is $12.00/student, which includes a continental breakfast and lunch. Registration materials will be available in early April and payment is due by April 9, 2008. Since many high schools will be invited to this event, we can accommodate a limited number of students; registration will be on a first come, first served basis. As members of the planning team, we strongly encourage Lakewood students to participate in this event.

Seniors!  Please be sure to double check deadlines for scholarships and college applications.   Timelines may be different for each scholarship opportunity as well as for college application/admission procedures. Websites are valuable resources for up-to-date information.

SAT Subject Tests are one-hour long multiple-choice tests that measure knowledge and skills in a specific subject area. Some colleges (usually the highly selective ones) specify the SAT Subject Tests they require for admission or placement; others allow applicants to choose which tests to take. Students should take Subject Tests as soon as possible after completing the course in the subject area. Important information and test preparation materials are available at: www.collegeboard.com/student/testing/sat/about/SATII.html.

Student Enrichment

As in the past, Lakewood High School will be invited to involve our students in various enrichment activities outside of school during the 2007-2008 school year, e.g., Town Hall lectures, City Club luncheons, Buckeye Boys and Girls State programs, Look Up To Cleveland activities, etc. While we do our best to inform students of these opportunities and invite them to become involved, we ask that you also encourage your students to be informed by listening to announcements and following up on recommendations from their teachers and counselors. If you are available and would be willing to help us transport students during the day or after school hours, please let me know as we sometimes need assistance with transportation.

This website is intended to be a service to you—please do not hesitate to offer suggestions to improve it. I look forward to working with you and your student(s) over these next few years.

About the Gifted Program
While many gifted students at the elementary and middle school level are served in a self-contained gifted classroom, gifted students at LHS are served, along with any student who meets the prerequisites, through advanced and Advanced Placement classes. LHS provides many of these rigorous courses, and with the consent of parents and teachers, students may pursue this advanced level sequence throughout high school.

Other services to meet the needs of gifted students include Post Secondary Enrollment Option, Independent Study and community activities that enrich the academic experience.

A Gifted Coordinator works from the Connection Center at Lakewood High School to provide support services for students, staff, and parents. The coordinator assists high school staff in meeting individual student needs, works with Central Office personnel to ensure the high school is in compliance with laws governing gifted students, serves as the Advanced Placement Coordinator, administers specific grade-level testing throughout the year, promotes scholastic and leadership opportunities, plans special events, and helps with the college application process. The Coordinator is an advocate for gifted education in general and gifted students in particular.
