As in the past, Lakewood High School will be invited to select students for various enrichment activities outside of school during the 2009-10 school year, e.g., Buckeye Boys and Girls State programs, HOBY leadership, Look Up To Cleveland activities, etc. While we do our best to inform students of these opportunities and invite them to become involved, we ask that you also encourage your students to be informed by listening to announcements and following up on recommendations from their teachers and counselors.
IMPORTANT INFORMATION for sophomores and juniors! On Saturday, October 17, 2009, the PSAT/NMSQT (Preliminary Scholastic Assessment Test/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test) will be given at Lakewood High School. The PSAT allows students to assess their skills in critical reading, mathematical reasoning and writing, gives them specific suggestions on how to improve their skills and compares their academic skills with those of other college-bound students. This test is great practice for sophomores and juniors who will take the SAT in the future. In addition, academically talented juniors who take the test may qualify for National Merit and/or National Achievement recognition.
Students may register for the PSAT in the Bookroom beginning Monday, September 28, until Thursday, October 8. The fee for this test is $25.00, and checks may be made payable to Lakewood High School. The Bookroom will accept cash, check or money order. Parents may also call the Bookroom at 216-529-4047 between 8 a.m. and 3 p.m. if they wish to pay by credit card (Visa or MasterCard only). All students must pick up their PSAT Student Bulletin in the Bookroom. The Student Bulletin includes practice questions and other pertinent information. In addition, descriptions of the types of questions on this test as well as practice test questions may be found at the following website: http://www.collegeboard.com/student/testing/psat/prep.html. I highly recommend that you and your students become familiar with the college board website for PSAT, SAT and Advanced Placement information and test practice questions.
SAT Subject Tests are one-hour long multiple-choice tests that measure knowledge and skills in a specific subject area. Some colleges (usually the highly selective ones) specify the SAT Subject Tests they require for admission or placement; others allow applicants to choose which tests to take. Students should take Subject Tests as soon as possible after completing the course in the subject area.
