Mathematician Diversity Project

Many people have made contributions to mathematics. In continuing celebration of February as Black History Month and March as Women's History Month, we will learn about the achievements of some mathematicians who have played major roles.

abacus After some research, pick one of the following:
African-American person OR woman OR someone from your own ethnic heritage who has made a contribution to mathematics. It will be beneficial if you understand the math that this person worked with. Once you have identified a person you are interested in, find 3-4 sources to help you write a short report about this person and their contribution. No more than one of your sources can be a Web site; no more than one can be an encyclopedia.

The final paper should include the following:

Brief history of their life
Their work in mathematics and its significance
An example of their work or its usefulness
Relationship to the math that you know

MacTutor History of Mathematics archive-biographies (a source of many biographies of mathematicians)
The History of Mathematics on the World Wide Web-biographies (a source of many biographies of mathematicians)
Biographies of Women Mathematicians
Hall of Great Mathematicians (set up like a hall of fame for mathematicians)
History of Mathematics timeline (can search by time period and concept)
Mathematicians of the African Diaspora
Muslim Scientists, Mathematicians and Astronomers

Research Databases (Outside the Library OPLIN databases require an Ohio public library card for access).
