It ended quietly on the 13th green with a kiss, a hug and a sigh of relief.
For the first time in the 60-year history of the Cleveland Women's Golf Association championship a mother faced her daughter in the final. When the last putt dropped, Anne Bierman wrested the CWGA title away from her mother, Mary Ann Bierman, who was going for her eight crown.
Anne, 20, a junior at William & Mary, defeated mom, 6 and 5, in the scheduled 36-home championship match. Mom was happy when it ended, win or lose.
"I'm glad it's over," said Mary Ann wearily after 31 holes in the scorching August heat. "I couldn't concentrate and concentrating is my game."
"Anne just hits the ball so long, longer than just about anybody."
"Really, it's nice to have someone else win -- and keep it in the family. I'm so proud of Anne."
Mary Ann confessed to being very tired during the afternoon round, when she actually played her daughter just about even.
Anne Bierman was three-up on mom after nine holes and never trailed thereafter. She had a one-over-par 77 in the morning to 83 for Mary Ann. Both played the front side in 40 shots in the afternoon.
The match was concluded on the par five 13th when Anne earned a par and mom boogied.
"I concentrated all right except on the greens on occasion," the winner said. "This was interesting, but I had the same attitude as I would going into any match. "This was my biggest win outside of college."
Mary Ann and Anne Bierman each play out of Mayfield Country Club.
The twosome attracted probably the largest gallery the CWGA has had in
years. Mom didn't win, but dad, Bill Bierman, took wife and daughter
out to dinner last night to celebrate.
