James Emory "Double X" Foxx was born in Sudlersville, Maryland in 1907. Philadelphia Athletics manager Connie Mack put him at first base in 1929, when the A's won their first of three consecutive pennants. One of the top Major League sluggers of all time, Foxx hit 58 home runs in 1932, and in 1933 took the American League Triple Crown with 48 homers, 163 RBI and .356 batting average. He went to the Boston Red Sox in 1936, where he played for six seasons. When he retired in 1945, he still ranked #2 on the all-time home-run list (behind Babe Ruth). He remains the only Major League player to hit at least 30 home runs in 12 straight seasons. Foxx entered the Hall of Fame in 1951, and died in 1967 in Miami.

The players featured on this set of twenty Classic Collection stamps were honored last season as part of Major League Baseball's All-Century Team program. The Legends of Baseball stamps were issued in Atlanta in conjunction with Major League Baseball's 2000 All-Star Week, which concluded with the 71st All-Star Game at Turner Field. The stamps were illustrated by joe Saffold of Savannah, Georgia.
