Birdtown   Birdtown: Lakewood’s Oldest Neighborhood:

Discovery students learned about Birdtown, Lakewood’s oldest neighborhood and a typical “company town.” They conducted oral histories of five past and current residents of the area, the ward council person, and a member of the City of Lakewood planning department staff. On two walking tours, the students visited sites and studied architectural features they learned about during secondary source research and oral histories. They entered a recently restored original bank building, St. Nicholas Ukrainian Orthodox Church and GrafTech (current occupant and company descendant of National Carbon Company). The students presented this documentary to an audience of parents, historical society members, interviewees, the school district superintendent and other dignitaries at the end of the school year as well as at a Lakewood City Council meeting and the inaugural event for the Lakewood Preservation Fund.
