Native American Night
R.D.
2nd grade student
Last Friday, my class and I came back to school at 6:45 p.m. for Native American Night. Native American Night is when you sleep over at school. There was yummy food, the coolest crafts, and the loudest drums.
A few months ago my teacher, Ms. Bluemel, gave us a project. We had to choose a Native American tribe to research. We also had to make a costume that looked like clothes that your tribe wore. We wore these on Native American Night.
When I got to school for Native American Night the first thing I did was get in my regalia (costume). Then, I had to wait for the rest of the kids to arrive at school. After all the kids where wearing their regalia, we got to watch Robin Pease, a real Native American of the Mohawk tribe, tell a story. She let us play two games. One of the games was Ball in Air. You play by keeping a ball in the air. Indians used animal intestines for a ball but we used a balloon.
After Robin Pease left, we got to have a drumming circle. Mr. Mulready helped us. We made drums last Tuesday. Mine has a lot of different and bright colors. Each of us played a solo while everybody else played softly in the back ground.
After that, we went in to the cafeteria to do crafts. The first craft I made was the bag to carry all my small crafts. Then I made my basket. It was hard, but I think that I’m pretty good at weaving baskets. While I was waiting for Mr. Zettler to help me with the top of my basket, I made a corn husk doll and a wrist band. If you were done with your crafts by 10:00 p.m. you got to play moccasin toss. It is like water balloon toss, just moccasin instead of balloons.
We had our midnight snack in the teachers’ lounge. There were apples and dip, popcorn, and veggies and dip. After the snack, the girls went to the story room and the boys went to Mr. Shield’s room. Since I am a girl I will tell you about my night in the story room. After I set up my sleeping bag, I went into the bathroom to change into my P. J. s and brush my teeth. When I got back into the story room, I watched a movie. The movie had Native American stories, for example, a story about how we got fire. When the movie was over, I was almost asleep. I think I fell asleep between 12:45 a.m. and 1:00 a.m.
In the morning I was awake at 7:30 a.m. I got dressed, brushed my teeth, and packed up by 8:00 a.m. Then, we went back up to the teachers’ lounge and had breakfast. The moms passed out cereal, fruit, and corn meal muffins. My mom was there for breakfast.
I liked Native American Night so much, that I wish it was EVERY night.
