SS. Cyril & Methodius School History

As the oldest Catholic school in Lakewood, Ohio, SS. Cyril & Methodius School opened in 1905, just five years after the parish was founded.

Rev. J. F. Masat, newly ordained was the first pastor.  He led the effort for the erection of the first parish building, a frame structure on the corner of Madison and Lakewood Avenues.  The first floor had two classrooms and three rooms for Sisters' living quarters.
The second floor served as the Church.  There were 140 children in the two classrooms.

In 1916 the new yellow brick building, facing Alameda Avenue, was erected.  The Church was located on the ground floor and six large classrooms occupied the second floor.  In 1956, the two-story build was remodeled extensively.  The third floor was added, along with the Principal's office and six additional classrooms.  The ground floor was converted to a large assembly hall with a kitchen, coat check room, and storage space.

A modest estimate would indicate that more than two thousand children have been educated at SS. Cyril & Methodius School over the past 93 years.  The dedication of the priests, sisters, lay teachers, parents and parishioners has been a treasure for which we are eternally grateful.
