Catholic Academy - 2007 Summer Reading List - Grade 5 |
Dear Incoming Fifth Grader:
Welcome to summer and the Fifth Grade Summer Reading Program! Your assignment for the upcoming summer months is to read From the Mixed-up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler by E.L. Konisburg. You will also respond in writing to a number of journal prompts. You will also have to identify unfamiliar words you read and look up their definitions in the dictionary. The grade you receive on this assignment will be counted as a test grade. You will also take a short objective test on the book during the first week of school. Together, these will be your first grades in Reading for the first quarter. Please complete follow the following steps for your summer reading.
- 1. Go to the library or a bookstore to obtain a copy of From the Mixed-up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler. You will only need the book to read and complete your assignment; it is not necessary to purchase the book.
- 2. Purchase a composition book or notebook to use as a journal for your assignment. Please do not purchase anything smaller than a composition book. This assignment will be the only thing in the journal.
- 3. Cut out the individual journal prompts listed on the attached page and paste them into a journal page. Use only one page per prompt. You may choose to rewrite the prompt on the top of the journal page.
- 4. Read From the Mixed-up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler, stopping after every two chapters to respond to the journal prompts. It is important that you respond to the prompts right after reading each section, so that you may accurately respond to the events.
- 5. Your journal prompts must be in the form of a paragraph and must be in complete sentences. Your responses must answer the question and be accurate concerning events in the story.
- 6. As you are reading, choose at least one vocabulary word per chapter that is unfamiliar to you. After looking up the word in the dictionary use the attached sheets to list the word and rate your understanding. You will then define the meaning using your won words and draw a picture and next to the picture list synonyms, antonyms or related words.
When you return to school, you will be asked to bring in your journal some time during the first week. Do not bring in your journal on the first day. Your teacher will let you know when it is due.
You can earn 5 extra points for the first quarter for participating in the summer reading program at any library or for those programs sponsored by local bookstores. . A maximum of 10 points will be granted. Bring in your completed sheets or certificates as proof of participation. The extra points will be added to your objective test grade.
Have a wonderful summer. We look forward to seeing you all in the fall!
Sincerely,
Grade 5 Teachers
