POLITICAL IDENTITIES
DISCUSSION SERIES
At the last meeting
we continued on with a description of conservatism, covering those dimensions
not discussed in the previous meeting.
Then we discussed the viewpoint(s) of the younger people
participating. Some highlights:
Concern with environment, animal
rights.p
Choice a primary value. Likewise for equal opportunity.
Free market economy
does leave some people behind.
Look at the analysis of liberalism and conservatism. Critique it – What is
erroneous? What is missing?
Then let’s think about:
WHAT IS MISSING FROM THE CONVENTIONAL
ACCOUNT?
What other dimensions
or aspects are people thinking about?
What other positions are
there? Examples –
The “live simply”
movement – What political implications?
“Bo-Bo”s
Communitarianism
The view expressed
in the op-ed article by Whitehead
(“Culture”) --
What are its political implications?
For each position, how does it differ from conservatism or
liberalism? What are its defining features?
Let’s
begin on a list of positions that are
currently being held, and beginning next
meeting, we’ll look at each of them.
