POLITICAL IDENTITIES DISCUSSION SERIES

 

 

Summary of last meeting/discussion outline

 

At the last meeting we continued on with a description of conservatism, covering those dimensions not discussed in the previous meeting.  Then we discussed the viewpoint(s) of the younger people participating.  Some highlights:

            Concern with environment, animal rights.p

            Choice a primary value.  Likewise for equal opportunity.

 Free market economy does leave some people behind.

 

Tonight’s handout and next meeting

 

 

            Look at the analysis of liberalism and conservatism.  Critique it – What is

erroneous?  What is missing?

 

            Then let’s think about: 

 

 

                 WHAT IS MISSING FROM THE CONVENTIONAL ACCOUNT?

 

                        What other dimensions or aspects are people thinking about?

 

                    What other positions are there?   Examples –

 

                              The “live simply” movement – What political implications?

 

                              “Bo-Bo”s

 

                              Communitarianism

                             

                              The view expressed in the op-ed article by Whitehead

(“Culture”)  --  What are its political implications?

 

 

                     For each position, how does it differ from conservatism or

liberalism?  What are its defining features?

 

 

Let’s begin on a list of positions that are currently being held, and beginning next meeting, we’ll look at each of them.
