Mary McLeod Bethune

Mary was born in Maysville, South Carolina, in 1875. She helped found a hospital and a college for blacks; she organized Franklin Roosevelt's "Black Cabinet" to push for an equitable New Deal; she worked for racial pride and against discrimination in every aspect of American life. She was an eloquent, impassioned speaker, and a woman of integrity. Mary died in her home in 1955.
