WILLIAM SCHEIDE

William Scheide, after graduating from Princeton University, began to specialize in the music of Bach while he was earning his Master of Arts degree in musicology at Columbia University. In 1945, in making his own index of Bach's works, he discovered in the cantatas a virtually untapped source of musical gems for vocal-instrumental ensemble, and the following year he organized the Bach Aria Group.

Julius Baker is considered this country's leading flute virtuoso. Oboist Robert Bloom, as well, has won nation-wide recognition through his concert appearances and recordings. The name of Eileen Farrell, a truly great opera and concert star, is familiar everywhere. Canadian bass-baritone Norman Farrow is gaining fame through concerts and broadcasts. Bernard Greenhouse and his Stradivarius cello have scored triumphs in Europe, South America, and the United States. Jan Peerce, long associated with the Met, may be described simply as "America's foremost tenor," and the voice and the artistry of Carol Smith have been widely acclaimed. Concert pianist Paul Ulanowsky is also recognized as a superb accompanist. Like him, violinist Maurice Wilk has made extensive concert tours, here and abroad.
