ARTHUR LOESSER

Arthur Loesser is head of the piano department at the Cleveland Institute of Music and occupies a leading position in the world of music as teacher, soloist, and devotee of chamber music. He is also an author, lecturer, and music critic for the Cleveland Press. He was graduated with honors from the Institute of Musical Art in New York; concertized in Germany, toured for three years as associate of the famous American violinist, Maud Powell, making an extensive tour of Australia, and later accompanied Mischa Elman to the Far East; was assisting artist of Schumann-Heink on her tours, and was a member of the Stringwood Ensemble of New York and also of the Beethoven Association. He has been soloist with the Cleveland Orchestra, the New York Philharmonic, the Cincinnati Symphony, the Minneapolis Symphony, and other leading orchestras, in addition to filling engagements in New York City and elsewhere. Mr. Loesser served in the United States Amy as major from October 1943 to May 1946, in the Intelligence Department. He is author of the book "Humor in American Song," and is editor of a book of Scarlatti Sonatas. He is heard annually in recital at the Cleveland Museum of Art. Recently he has been making a series of television broadcasts originating in Cleveland.
