What do I need to know about borrowing books and other materials?

The number of items which may be checked out is 100, and you may keep material for two weeks. Provided that no one else has requested them, you may renew items either in person or by calling the Circulation Desk. We ask that you be considerate of other patrons who may also need to use our resources.

If the material you want is checked out, we will put a reserve on it and notify you when it is available. If the library does not own the material you need we may be able to obtain it from another location. Please ask for assistance. Librarians will assist you in locating materials or suggesting comparable items.

The library has a drive-up window for picking up reserved materials and for returns. There is also a book drop for after-hour returns.

How do I find information?

Information is presented in many formats. Library staff can help you find the best source of information. Here are the major research tools.

Library Catalog
Use the catalog computers to find books and audio-visual material in the library. Outside the library, using the World Wide Web from any Internet-connected computer, enter the Web address: http://lkwdpl.org and select the online Library Catalog.

Internet
The World Wide Web is another information source available to Lakewood Library users. Technology Center staff will assist you with your search. The library also offers short workshops on how to locate and evaluate information on the Web.

Periodicals
Using Periodicals and Periodical Databases

First, what are periodicals?
Periodicals are publications such as magazines, scholarly journals, or newspapers which are published at regular intervals or “periods." They are an excellent source of  information on many topics which you may need or want to investigate during your academic career or leisure time. Learning to find information efficiently in periodicals is a valuable skill not only for students but for any library user.

When are periodicals useful?
Since magazines and newspapers are published more frequently than books, they provide more current information and differing viewpoints. They may also include the most recent research results, financial data, or other aspects of topics you may want to investigate. Examples of periodicals are Time, Sports Illustrated, Journal of American History, The Wall Street Journal, and The Plain Dealer.

How do I find information in periodicals?
Since it would be difficult and very time-consuming to look at the contents of hundreds of periodicals to find information on a specific topic, you need to use an index or periodical database to make your search efficient and effective. A periodical database is a frequently updated collection of citations to articles from magazines, newspapers, and journals. One can quickly search a very large number of articles for specific topics, titles, authors, etc. Databases generally provide information about the original article and sometimes the full text of the article. The text of the article can be printed.

How do I reach the periodical databases?
The library has access to periodical databases via the Internet that are provided by the Ohio Public Library Information Network (OPLIN). In the library’s Technology Center simply choose a database from the computer workstation menu.

Outside the library you can access these databases from any remote Internet-connected computer using your library card. Enter the Web address http://lkwdpl.org and select Virtual Library Services for instructions to access the OPLIN databases. In other words, you may access the databases from your home or office computer if that computer is connected to the Internet. From a remote computer you will be asked to select your library (Lakewood) and library card number. Once you provide that information you will be connected to a list of the databases.

Some of the periodical and other subscription databases available are:
· Encyclopaedia Britannica Online.
· Electric Library, newspaper and magazine articles, television and radio transcripts, and reference works.
· EBSCOhost, full-text articles from over 1800 magazines, plus summaries and indexing for over 2780 additional journals and magazines.
· SIRS Knowledge Source, issues-related articles of great value in preparing school reports.
· NoveList guide to reading material for adults and young people.
